INGREDIENTS
Seasoning
- 🧂 3 tablespoons salt
- 🧂 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
- 1 pinch nutmeg
Vegetables
- 1 pound green beans
Pasta
- 1 pound elbow macaroni
Dairy
- 🧈 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 🥛 5 cups milk
- 1 pound Cheddar cheese, freshly grated
Other
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup French fried onions
STEPS
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Bring 3 quarts of generously salted water to a boil on high heat. Add green beans and cook for about 4 minutes until barely tender. Cool and cut into 1-inch pieces.
Add elbow macaroni to the boiling bean water and cook 1 minute less than package directions. Drain and transfer to a large bowl.
Prepare cheese sauce: melt butter over medium heat, whisk in flour, and cook for a few minutes. Add cold milk, whisk, and cook until thickened. Stir in seasonings, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.
Turn off heat and stir in grated cheese until melted.
Add green beans to macaroni in the bowl. Pour cheese sauce over macaroni mixture and combine evenly. Transfer into a baking dish.
Top evenly with French fried onions and press lightly. Bake until hot and browned, about 30 minutes.
Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
