INGREDIENTS
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
- 🧂 ½ teaspoon fine salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
- ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper (Optional)
- ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (Optional)
Wet Ingredients
- 🧈 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 🍚 ⅔ cup white sugar
- ¼ cup molasses
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 🥚 1 large egg
Icing
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 💧 4 teaspoons water, or as needed
STEPS
Gather all the ingredients.
Whisk together all dry ingredients in a large bowl until thoroughly mixed.
Cream butter and sugar together until pale yellow and creamy, about 2 minutes. Add molasses, vanilla, and egg, whisking until well blended.
Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and stir until the flour disappears.
Wrap dough with plastic wrap in a rectangle shape and refrigerate until cold and firm, about 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with a Silpat mat.
Slice chilled dough into pieces, form six-pointed star shapes, and place onto the prepared baking sheet.
Bake cookies for 12 minutes for chewy texture or 15 minutes for crispy texture. Cool for 30 minutes on a wire rack.
Prepare icing by mixing powdered sugar and water until a ribbon is formed. Transfer to a piping bag and decorate cookies with snowflake designs.
Serve and enjoy!
