INGREDIENTS
Base ingredients
- 🧈 1/4 cup butter
- 🧄 3 cloves garlic
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 🥛 4 cups whole milk
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 🧂 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoons lemon zest
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 🥔 3 pounds russet potatoes
- 🧅 1 cup onion, sliced
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
STEPS
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Stir in flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute.
Gradually whisk in milk, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cook while whisking constantly until thickened and bubbly. Continue to cook for another 2 minutes. Add lemon zest and lemon juice, then remove from heat.
Layer 1/3 of the potato slices in the prepared dish, followed by 1/3 of the onion slices, 1/3 of the Parmesan cheese, and 1/3 of the sauce. Repeat the layers twice, finishing with remaining sauce.
Sprinkle the top layer with the remaining Parmesan cheese.
Bake, uncovered, until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown, 50 to 60 minutes.
Let the casserole stand for 15 to 20 minutes before serving. Garnish with chives or cracked black pepper, if desired.
