INGREDIENTS
Dry ingredients
- 1 cup rolled oats
- ¾ cup cornmeal
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 2 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules
- 🧀 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
- 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
Wet ingredients
- ⅓ cup margarine
- 💧 1 cup boiling water
- 🥛 ½ cup milk
- 🥚 1 large egg
STEPS
Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C). Grease cookie sheets. In a large bowl, stir together the rolled oats, margarine, and boiling water. Set aside for 10 minutes.
Combine the cornmeal, sugar, and bouillon. Stir into the oat mixture along with the egg, milk, and shredded cheese until smooth. Gradually stir in the flour until a stiff but workable dough forms.
Knead dough briefly. On a floured surface, roll dough to 1/2-inch thick. Cut with a bone-shaped cutter or into 1x3-inch rectangles. Place on prepared cookie sheets, 1 inch apart.
Bake treats for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from sheets and cool completely on wire racks.
