INGREDIENTS
Base
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 🧈 ½ cup unsalted butter
- 🍞 1 (8 ounce) loaf crusty French bread, cut into bite-sized pieces
Liquid Mix
- 🥛 2 cups milk
- 🥚 6 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Topping
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar, or to taste
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste
STEPS
Gather all ingredients and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Melt brown sugar and butter together in a saucepan over medium-low heat until dissolved, 2 to 4 minutes. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Scatter French bread pieces over the butter-brown sugar mixture in the dish.
Whisk milk, eggs, and vanilla together. Pour over the bread and press down with a spatula so the bread absorbs the liquid. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 8 hours to overnight.
Remove the dish from the refrigerator and preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
Mix brown sugar and cinnamon for the topping, then sprinkle evenly over the dish.
Bake for 30 minutes, covering with foil if browning too much. Remove and let cool slightly before serving.
Cut into squares and serve with caramel sauce from the bottom of the pan spooned on top.
