INGREDIENTS
Wet Ingredients
- 💧 1 cup water
- 🧈 ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Dry Ingredients
- 2 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour, divided
- 🍫 ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 🍚 2 cups white sugar
- 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 🧂 ½ teaspoon salt
- 🌰 ½ cup chopped walnuts (Optional)
STEPS
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch pan.
Combine water and 1/3 cup flour in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook while whisking constantly until thickened. Let cool for 15 to 20 minutes.
Melt butter in a small saucepan. Mix in cocoa until smooth. Let cool for about 15 minutes.
Combine the remaining flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Set aside.
Mix sugar and vanilla into the cooled flour-water mixture with an electric mixer until well combined.
Add the cocoa mixture and mix until incorporated. Then fold in the dry flour mixture until just blended. Stir in walnuts if using.
Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool before cutting into squares.
