INGREDIENTS
Cake Batter
- ½ cup shortening
- 🧈 ½ cup butter
- 🧂 2 cups white sugar
- 🥚 6 eggs
- 🥛 3 cups milk
- 3 cups self-rising flour
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Frosting
- 🧂 3 cups white sugar
- 🧈 1 cup butter
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 💧 ¼ cup water
- 🥛 2 cups evaporated milk
STEPS
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour 4 or 5 - 8 inch round cake pans.
Cream shortening, butter, and 2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition, then stir in vanilla.
Add flour alternately with 3 cups milk, beat well. Add 1/4 cup batter into each prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake layers in batches.
Bake for 5 to 7 minutes just until layers are dried but not browned.
Prepare frosting: Combine sugar, butter, cocoa, water, and evaporated milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to rolling boil and stir frequently. Boil for 2 minutes.
Remove frosting from heat and beat for one minute. Stack cake layers with frosting in between and smooth the sides and top with remaining frosting.
