INGREDIENTS
Vegetables
- 1 medium head cabbage
- 3 carrots, grated
Grain
- ¾ cup uncooked white rice
Meat
- 1 pound ground beef
- ¾ pound ground pork
Seasoning and Spices
- 🧂 Salt to taste
- Ground black pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon dried mixed herbs (optional)
Oil and Fat
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
Sauces
- 3 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons sour cream
Other
- 2 ½ cups water, divided
- 2 onions, chopped, divided
STEPS
Make slits in cabbage base or cut out core. Boil whole cabbage until softened. Drain and cool, then separate leaves, keeping them intact.
Cook rice in 1 1/2 cups water until tender and liquid absorbed.
Heat 2 tablespoons of oil and sauté half of the chopped onions until soft. Combine with cooked rice, ground beef, ground pork, salt, and pepper.
Lay a cabbage leaf flat, add 1 tablespoon of filling, and roll into a cabbage roll by folding in edges.
Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and brown cabbage rolls on both sides.
Place browned cabbage rolls in a pot. Sprinkle with remaining onions and grated carrots.
Combine sauce ingredients: mix tomato paste, sour cream, and 1 cup of water, season with salt and herbs. Pour sauce over rolls.
Cover the pot and cook on medium-low heat until cabbage rolls are fully cooked and sauce has thickened.
