INGREDIENTS

  • Meat

    • 1 (5 pound) bone-in pork shoulder roast
  • Seasonings

    • 🧂 1 tablespoon kosher salt
    • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
    • 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
    • 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • Liquids

    • 1 ½ cups apple cider vinegar
    • 1 ½ tablespoons hot pepper sauce
  • Sweeteners

    • 🟫 2 tablespoons brown sugar

STEPS

1

Place the pork shoulder into a slow cooker and season with salt and black pepper. Pour apple cider vinegar around the pork. Cover, and cook on Low for 12 hours. The pork should easily pull apart into strands.

2

Remove the pork from the slow cooker and discard any bones. Strain off the liquid, reserving 2 cups. Shred the pork using tongs or two forks, and return it into the slow cooker.

3

Stir together the reserved liquid, brown sugar, hot pepper sauce, cayenne pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes in a bowl. Mix it back into the shredded pork in the slow cooker.

4

Cover the slow cooker and keep on Low setting until ready to serve.
