INGREDIENTS
Alcohol & Mixer
- 2 ounces gin
- 🥤 4 ounces tonic water, to taste
Spices & Garnishes
- Juniper berries, optional
- Peppercorns, optional
- Star anise, optional
- Cardamom pods, optional
- Cloves, optional
- Cinnamon sticks, optional
- 🍋 Slices or zest of citrus fruits (such as lemon, lime, or orange)
- 🌿 Fresh herb sprigs (such as basil, thyme, mint, rosemary, or tarragon)
STEPS
Fill a large red wine glass with fresh ice almost to the top.
Add whole spices to the glass, such as juniper berries, peppercorns, star anise, cardamom pods, cloves, or cinnamon sticks. Bruise them if desired to release flavors.
Pour in gin. Then very slowly and gently pour in tonic water to preserve carbonation. Use a Mediterranean-style tonic for a less bitter taste.
Add slices and/or zest from citrus fruits of your choice. Use a spoon or cocktail stirrer to gently push down and mix the ingredients without stirring vigorously.
Insert fresh herb sprigs into the glass. To enhance fragrance, slap the herbs between your hands or gently squeeze them to release essential oils.
Serve the drink 3 to 5 minutes after mixing to allow it to chill thoroughly.
