INGREDIENTS
Dough
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 🧈 1 cup butter, melted
- ¾ cup white sugar
- 🥛 ¼ cup lukewarm milk
- 🥚 1 egg
- 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
Filling
- 1 cup molasses or black treacle
- 1 ⅓ cups soft brown sugar
- 🧈 ¼ cup butter
- 🌿 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
STEPS
Combine flour, melted butter, white sugar, milk, egg, and yeast in a large bowl. Knead until dough is smooth and elastic. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rise for about 45 minutes.
In a small saucepan, heat treacle, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon over medium heat until well combined and smooth. This should take 3 to 5 minutes.
Preheat a shallow waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Divide the dough into balls approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
Bake each dough ball in the preheated waffle iron for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until golden and the iron stops steaming.
Use a cake spatula to remove the waffle. Trim edges using a round cutter and slice horizontally into 2 rounds while still hot.
Spread 1 to 2 tablespoons of the prepared filling on one round and sandwich with the other half. Repeat with remaining dough balls and filling.
