INGREDIENTS
Base
- 🧈 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 🌾 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 💧 1 tablespoon water
Filling
- 💧 1 cup water
- 🧈 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 🌾 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 🥚 3 eggs
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
Icing
- 1 cup confectioners' sugar
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream
- 🧈 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
STEPS
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Make the dough: Cut 1/2 cup butter into 1 cup flour using a knife or pastry blender. Add 1 tablespoon water and mix until crumbly. Roll dough out to 3–4 inches in width. Place onto a rectangular cookie sheet.
Prepare the filling: In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup water and 1/2 cup butter to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in remaining 1 cup flour until smooth. Beat in eggs, one at a time, and add 1 teaspoon almond extract. Spread filling over the dough.
Bake in the preheated oven for 55–60 minutes. The pastry will slightly fall as it cools.
Prepare icing: Combine confectioners' sugar, cream, softened butter, and remaining 1 teaspoon almond extract until smooth.
Remove the kringle from the oven and immediately spread icing over top.
